For the second weekend
in a row the K&K / FRAM team was at Milan Dragway competing
in an IHRA points event. Last week was a Divisional race and this
past weekend was the Motor City Nationals. The team was looking
forward to this race after their first trouble free race last
weekend. Although this weekend did not start out too good they
turned things around and were one round away from their third
National Event Final.
With over 65 cars trying
to qualify for 48 spots they knew they would have to run a very
quick time to even qualify for the event. Their first qualifying
attempt ended in disaster. Although running a season quick 7.39
elapsed time they melted a piston in the process. The team had
to go to work and tear down the motor and replace the piston,
they also changed carburetors in hopes of picking up some much
needed power. They did get a break when the second session was
cancelled due to rain. They were qualified in the number 41 position
but knew that would not hold up through the next session. Despite
all their work they were not able to improve on their first run.
That left them sitting in the number 51 position as the third
alternate. They decided to hope for some good luck and were ready
for the first round in case some of the qualified cars could not
make it. As luck would have it, there were three qualified cars
that did not show up and they were put into eliminations as an
alternate. The team took full advantage of the opportunity as
they moved through three rounds of eliminations with good reaction
times combined with a very consistent race car. Entering round
four they were up against the very tough Tim Molnar of Ohio. Although
they had the starting line advantage they could not hold off Molnar
as he crossed the finish line first by .0013 of a second. After
the very tough season so far the team was pleased with the end
result of the weekend.
The team is now getting
ready for the 10th Annual Stratford Spectacular this coming weekend
in Grand Bend then the IHRA Canadian Nationals the following week
at Toronto Motorsports Park.
