K&K
/ FRAM TEAM GOES OUT WITH A BANG AT THE BEND
After
a successful showing at the IHRA Motor City National in Michigan two
weeks ago the K&K /FRAM Team was looking to continue their success
at the 10th Annual Stratford Spectacular in Grand Bend. Their good
fortune was short lived as the ignition problems that were hampering
them earlier came back in a big way and cut their weekend short.
After running a problem free 7.44 in the first qualifying session
things just kept getting progressively worse every pass. First there
was a nitrous backfire at half track that caused an aborted run then
a nitrous backfire just after leaving the starting line. The later
occurred in the first round of eliminations but thanks to a red light
in the other lane the guys were heading into round two. After checking
everything over in the pits and changing a few ignition components
they staged the car hoping for the best. What they did was give the
5000 plus spectators a real show. As soon as the car left the starting
line it had a tremendous nitrous backfire through the carburetor.
With a big BANG and a ball of flames out the hood scoop and the headers
the car came to a stop about 60 feet out. Although the fire went out
immediately the damage was done. The force of the explosion almost
blew the hood scoop and hood right of the car. With the crew scratching
their heads they towed the car back to the trailer.
After getting back to the shop the thrashing began. After a few long
nights of going over every inch of the ignition system the team is
fairly sure that a faulty distributor was to blame, although they
will not know for sure until their next pass. That highly anticipated
pass will take place this weekend at Toronto Motorsports Park for
the IHRA AC Delco Nationals
